The Basie band finished its second reprise of the ending of “April in Paris,” and
Dave Rowell’s intense love affair with jazz had begun!
As an undergraduate at Amherst College, he hosted a late-night jazz show and worked in a music
store. This led to work in commercial broadcasting – as a DJ, newsman, and announcer. After
making the move to newspapers, he served as a jazz writer/reviewer, festival publicist, and occasional
concert producer. In thirty-five years, he has missed only one Monterey Jazz Festival!
During a business trip to Las Vegas, while scanning for a jazz station, Dave found KUNV. When
he moved here to work as a real estate broker, he naturally became a regular listener. Ultimately
he responded to a call for volunteers and now thoroughly enjoys being back behind the microphone,
helping “straight ahead” jazz to thrive.
Dave is also on the Board of Directors of the Las Vegas Jazz Society, chairing the Music/Program Committee and serving as Events Coordinator.
